Maths at North Gosforth Academy
The Mathematics department provides students with relevant and challenging mathematics to develop curious and industrious learners. Students will become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
Staff use a wide range of teaching and learning strategies to ensure all types of learners’ needs are met. Students will be given opportunities to investigate and explore within Mathematics developing their resilience, perseverance and curiosity. Students will be consistently challenged in order to maximise their true potential.
Regular intervention is common in the department both within lessons and outside. Revision classes, booster sessions and small group work are just some of the things offered to ensure students maximise their potential. Teachers are also available to support students before and after school.
Throughout Key Stage 3, students build upon the foundations of mathematics covered at Primary school. Lessons are planned to develop fluency, reasoning and problem solving, in line with the National Curriculum. The six key branches of mathematics covered are:

Students begin their GCSE course at the start of Year 10 and will build on the content, knowledge and skills developed at Key Stage 3. We follow the Edexcel 1MA1 course and students will be entered for either higher or foundation tier with the following grades being available:
